A/N: A Loki fanfic, set before the Thor movie timeline. He develops an attachment to a Midgardian who is on Asgard and as you’d expect, the result is chaos.
Warnings: No warnings.
It was the great cage of the Aesir. Balanced precariously on the branches of Yggdrasil, the waters of Asgard flow down through what we might now call space, and feed the great tree. It was the land of excess – gold, jewels, beauty, strength and talent. It was no wonder that the Halldis family stood out so much. Painfully so.
A large family, by any accounts. The Halldis family were rather unusual and all of Asgard knew it, if they did not know them personally. And the chances of an Asgardian meeting one of Odin’s servants would be so small that, well, you probably had a better chance of meeting an Asgardian on Earth.
The Halldis family were Midgardians. The only Midgardians to reside on Asgard, and probably the last. They were from a time long ago, when humans worshipped the Gods without faith and mind conflicting, before the other beliefs trespassed and corrupted. It was during the aftermath of one of his battles, Odin saw a woman crying. All around her was destruction – homes collapsed in the snow, the flames of battle licking them, and nothing seemed alive except her. She cradled a child in her arms and wept over its blue tinted body. The child was dead. That much was clear.
Odin witnessed a man stumble towards her. They were both neither young nor old, but in that brief moment where the man saw his wife cradle his young child, he aged a millennia. Together they wept and continued weeping, even as Odin approached them.
Odin promised them extended life. He promised them a life where they did not need human fear and human pain. He would rid them of all their suffering and give them a chance to begin their life again, on Asgard. They were a pair of the strongest humans he had ever seen. No one else in the area had survived that battle.
The husband looked at his sobbing wife and agreed to the Allfather’s terms, and together they were transported to Asgard in a flash of light, the colour of time blinding them.
Odin did not go back on his word. He gave the Halldis family a new life, and since they consumed the food of the Aesir, their lives were lengthened. Not like the Gods, but extended so that they could be alive to see their great great great grandchildren grow up and marry, before they died. It was part of Odin’s promise. All of the Halldis family would die in peace, and all be fertile and live to see their children grow. Of course, only the most common of Asgardian would bed a human. But it occasionally happened and the Halldis line would continue, each child destined to live slightly longer with the Asgardian blood increasing in their veins.
In return, Odin requested that they maintain Asgard. Though he had given them a home on the edge of the palace, Odin wanted them to respect all of Asgard. The many sons and daughters of Halldis tended to the land. They lived quietly and in secret and it was a rare moment if an Asgardian glimpsed them. The Halldis children tended to Asgard at the darkest of hours and did their best not to be seen. Not all of the Gods approved of them being there, but Odin would not go back on his word. Yvonne and Anshar Halldis had already passed away, and their children, and their children, and their children of their children’s children. The generations had moved on and the Halldis family barely remembered how they came to Asgard – only that their purpose in life was to serve and not be seen. You could not mistake them for one of the Aesir, as they were shorter, of smaller frame, and had none of the beauty of the Gods. They were human. That was all.
And sometimes that was all it took.
